Break the Code

Break the Code is a strategic deduction board game designed by Ryohei Kurahashi and published by IELLO. The game challenges players to crack their opponents’ codes by using logic and deduction skills.

Players: 2-4 Age: 10 and up Playtime: 15-30 minutes

Objective: In Break the Code, the objective is to deduce the secret code of your opponents before they can deduce yours. Each player’s code consists of a combination of numbered tiles, which are placed face down on their individual board.

Gameplay: At the beginning of the game, each player receives a set of numbered tiles and a player board. They create a secret code by placing a certain number of these tiles (depending on the player count) face down on their player board in ascending order.

The game proceeds in turns, with each player performing one action per turn. Players have two action options:

1. Ask a question: The player chooses an opponent and asks a question about their code. The questions are predefined and listed on the question cards. The opponent must answer truthfully, but their answer is given privately to the player who asked the question.

2. Make a guess: The player chooses an opponent’s tile and guesses its value. If the guess is correct, the tile is flipped face up. If incorrect, the player who made the guess must reveal one of their tiles to all players.

Players use the information they gather from asking questions and making guesses to deduce their opponents’ codes. The game ends when a player successfully reveals all the tiles in their opponents’ codes or when all players have taken a specified number of turns (based on the player count).

The player who has revealed the most tiles in their opponents’ codes at the end of the game is the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the fewest revealed tiles on their own board wins.
